How Long Should Your Tooth Be Sensitive After Getting a Dental Crown

When we need a dental crown, it’s often to protect or restore a tooth that’s been damaged or weakened. Crowns can bring relief and restore the function and appearance of a tooth, but many of us wonder what to expect in terms of sensitivity after the procedure. At Rush Family Dental, we understand that knowing what’s normal and when to call your dentist can make the process much smoother.

In this article, we’ll explore how long you can expect tooth sensitivity after getting a dental crown, why it happens, and what you can do to ease discomfort. Whether you’re preparing for your first crown or have already undergone the procedure, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Understanding Tooth Sensitivity After Crown Placement

It’s completely normal for your tooth to be sensitive after receiving a dental crown. The process of preparing the tooth for the crown involves removing some of the tooth structure, which can temporarily irritate the nerve inside. Additionally, if a temporary crown is placed, it may not provide the same level of insulation as the permanent crown.

Most people experience mild to moderate sensitivity for a few days to a week after the procedure. This sensitivity can be triggered by temperature extremes (hot or cold foods and drinks) or pressure from biting and chewing. The good news is that this discomfort should gradually subside as your tooth adjusts to the crown and any irritation to the nerve settles down.

How Long Does Sensitivity Last After a Temporary Crown?

When we place a temporary crown, it’s designed to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being custom-made. However, temporary crowns don’t always provide perfect coverage and can sometimes leave the tooth feeling more sensitive than usual.

Typically, sensitivity under a temporary crown lasts until your permanent crown is placed, usually around two to three weeks. During this time, it’s wise to avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on that side of your mouth and to brush and floss gently around the crown. If the sensitivity becomes severe or if the temporary crown feels loose or uncomfortable, give us a call so we can address any issues before your final appointment.

What to Expect After Getting Your Permanent Crown

Once your permanent crown is placed, you may notice a continuation of sensitivity, especially if the nerve inside your tooth was already inflamed before the procedure. Most of us find that this sensitivity resolves within a few days to a week after the final crown placement.

However, it’s important to monitor how your tooth feels. If you experience persistent or worsening biting/pressure sensitivity beyond a couple of weeks, it might indicate that the bite needs adjustment or that the nerve is reacting more strongly than expected. In rare cases, further treatment, such as a root canal, might be necessary if the tooth doesn’t settle.

Reducing Discomfort After Crown Placement

There are several steps you can take to make your recovery more comfortable. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, can help ease mild discomfort (Please only take those that do not interfere with any other medications that are currently being taken). Avoiding very hot or cold foods and drinks can also reduce sensitivity. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth and stick to soft foods for the first few days.

Good oral hygiene is essential to ensure your crown and surrounding gums stay healthy. Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and don’t forget to floss carefully around the crown. Always remember to pull your dental floss out to the side after cleaning around your temporary so that you don’t accidentally dislodge it by coming back up with your floss. If you have a temporary crown, avoid using floss that might dislodge it.

At Rush Family Dental, we also offer dental crowns made with advanced technology that ensures a precise fit and minimizes sensitivity. This process is now all digital and doesn’t include any of the poor tasting goop used in the past. If you’re considering a crown or need a replacement, we’re here to provide expert care and guidance tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long should I expect sensitivity after a same-day crown?

If you receive a same-day crown, you might experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days. The preparation process and placement can irritate the surrounding gum tissue and nerve, but most sensitivity should subside within a week. Same-day crowns eliminate the need for a temporary crown, which often reduces the overall sensitivity experience.

What should I do if my sensitivity doesn’t go away?

If you’re still experiencing tooth sensitivity a couple of weeks after your crown placement, it’s a good idea to contact us. Persistent sensitivity might indicate an issue with the fit or the underlying tooth. We can assess your situation and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your crown is comfortable and functional.
